What’s Your Story of Alopecia and How Does it Affects You

Something recently inspired me to reflect on how often we define ourselves by what we’re going through—especially when it comes to alopecia, hair loss, or any ongoing health challenge. Without realizing it, we start to believe that our condition is who we are.

We tell ourselves stories like: I’m not capable. I’m not strong enough. I’m not the type of person who heals.

And worse—we begin to believe them.

Eight years ago, I thought I knew exactly who I was. I thought I was healthy. I thought I was confident. I thought my life was going in a certain direction. Then alopecia entered my life, and everything I thought I knew about myself, my future, and even my relationships came into question.

Who loved me. Who didn’t. Who I was becoming. Who I thought I had been.

If I had stayed in that version of the story, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

The truth is this: the story you are telling yourself right now is not the full truth of who you are.

The Old Story vs. The New You

When I look back at who I was eight years ago, I see a very different person. The diagnosis didn’t just affect my hair—it reshaped my identity, my emotions, my mental state, and my entire sense of control.

It was humbling in every sense. It broke down old versions of me—ego, expectations, assumptions—so something more real could be built.

And that’s what healing often requires.

You don’t just “add” healing on top of who you already are. You become someone new.

But that only happens when you allow the old story to fall away.

The Power of the Story You Tell Yourself

One of the most important questions I ask now is this:

What story are you holding onto that is keeping you stuck?

Because many people don’t realize it, but they are not stuck because of their condition alone. They are stuck because of their beliefs about their condition.

I’ve seen it in clients. I’ve seen it in conversations. I’ve even seen it in myself years ago.

There’s a moment where you realize: this isn’t just about hair anymore—this is about identity.

And identity is something you can rewrite.

The Horse Tied to a Pole

There’s a psychological image I often think about: a strong horse tied to a small pole.

The horse is powerful enough to break free—but it doesn’t.

Why?

Because it has learned to believe it cannot move.

That’s what limiting beliefs do. They don’t just hold you back physically—they condition your mind into believing there is no option to move forward.

And many of us carry this conditioning into adulthood. We learn to obey, to follow, to wait for permission, to accept limitations that were never truly ours.

But healing requires something different.

It requires questioning the story.

Alopecia Does Not Discriminate—And Neither Does Healing

Alopecia does not care who you are, where you live, what language you speak, or what your background is.

And the truth is: healing doesn’t discriminate either.

What does matter is the internal narrative—what you believe is possible for yourself.

Because two people can have the same diagnosis and take completely different paths:

One sees possibility.
The other sees limitation.

And that difference changes everything.

The Trap of One-Size-Fits-All Thinking

One of the biggest misunderstandings I see is the belief that there is a single fix for hair loss.

A shampoo. A serum. A supplement. A quick solution.

But the reality is far more complex.

Hair loss—especially alopecia—is not one-dimensional. It is influenced by multiple layers: lifestyle, stress, mindset, nutrition, environment, and individual biology.

This is why one-size-fits-all solutions often fall short.

What works for one person may not work for another because no two journeys are the same.

The Real Work: Looking Inward

At some point, the work shifts from looking outward for answers to looking inward for truth.

Not:

  • What product should I try next?
  • What doctor should I see next?

But instead:

  • What patterns am I repeating?
  • What am I unwilling to see?
  • What beliefs are keeping me stuck?

This part is uncomfortable. It requires honesty. It requires self-awareness.

And many people avoid it because it feels easier to keep searching externally.

But real change begins internally.

You Are Not Limited by Who You Think You Are

One of the most important truths I’ve learned is this:

You are not limited by who you think you are today.

You are capable of becoming someone entirely different.

Someone stronger.
Someone more aware.
Someone who heals.

But that transformation begins with a decision—to stop identifying with the old version of yourself.

Healing Is Not Linear

Healing is not about perfection. It is not about doing everything right all the time.

Some days you show up fully. Some days you show up halfway. Some days you simply rest.

And that is still movement forward.

What matters most is consistency—not intensity.

From Survival Mode to Growth Mode

Many people living with alopecia are in survival mode without even realizing it.

Covering. Managing. Coping. Avoiding.

But survival is not where life is meant to stay.

There is another state available—one where you are actively building, healing, and growing.

To get there, something has to shift internally first.

Not just actions—but identity.

You Are Capable of More Than You Realize

I’ve seen people transform when they begin to question their old beliefs. I’ve seen how quickly things can shift when someone becomes open, coachable, and willing to look inward.

And I’ve also seen what happens when they don’t.

The difference is not effort alone.

It is willingness.

Willingness to change the story.

Final Reflection

If you take one thing from this, let it be this question:

What story about yourself are you ready to let go of today?

Because the moment that story loosens its grip on you, something new becomes possible.

Not overnight. Not perfectly. But truly.

And from there, healing becomes not just a hope—but a direction.
