The Myths and Misinformation of Alopecia

When I was first diagnosed with alopecia, I did what most people do: I went straight to Google. I started searching for answers, trying to understand why and how this was happening to me. For many of us, that search is the beginning of our journey with alopecia. But unfortunately, what we find online is often filled with misinformation and confusing messages.
Alopecia is one of those words that many people may not be familiar with until they experience it personally—or know someone who does. And once we start looking for answers, we're bombarded with a range of information. Some say there's no cure, others claim there are no options, and there are countless articles from people who’ve tried numerous treatments—only to see no results. This is a major problem, and it’s something that can leave you feeling lost and hopeless.
Today, I want to talk about some of the biggest myths surrounding alopecia, myths that can often lead people down the wrong path. I’ve worked with so many people who have fallen for these myths and wasted time, money, and energy on things that don’t work.
So let’s clear up some of these misconceptions and set the record straight
Myth #1: There's No Cure for Alopecia
One of the most common myths about alopecia is that it can’t be healed—that there’s no cure. While it’s true that there isn’t a "one-size-fits-all" solution, that doesn’t mean healing isn’t possible. Alopecia isn’t about finding the perfect pill, shampoo, or topical treatment that works for everyone. The truth is that healing alopecia involves a holistic approach that includes diet, lifestyle changes, and mindset shifts. I’ve seen it firsthand, through my own journey and with countless clients, that alopecia can be reversed when you give your body the right support.
Myth #2: Hair Loss is Just Part of Aging
Another myth I want to address is the idea that hair loss is simply due to age. While it’s true that some people experience thinning hair as they get older, age is not the root cause of alopecia. I was diagnosed with alopecia in my thirties, and now, in my forties, I have more hair than I ever did before. It’s all about how you support your body and nourish your health. When your body thrives, so does your hair. Your age has nothing to do with it.
Myth #3: Hair Loss is Caused by Hair Dye and Chemical Treatments
Many people believe that hair loss is caused by over-dyeing your hair or exposing it to toxins from treatments like keratin straightening or hair dye. While it’s true that some hair treatments can be harsh on the hair and scalp, it’s not the root cause of hair loss. I’ve been dyeing my hair since I was 13, and even through periods of alopecia, coloring my hair was one of the few things that helped me feel more like myself.
So, no, hair loss isn’t caused by coloring your hair. However, certain chemical treatments may contribute to thinning, but they are just a small piece of a much larger puzzle.
Myth #4: You Have No Control Over Your Hair Loss
A big misconception is that once hair loss starts, there’s nothing you can do about it. This is completely false. You have far more control over your hair loss than you might think. In fact, I’ve had clients in my Hair N' Heal Program who have stopped their hair shedding in just two to four weeks. It’s not about waiting for months or years for results. You can take action right now and see improvements quickly.
Even if you have alopecia universalis (complete hair loss on the scalp and body), you can still take control of your hair growth. If you’ve lost all your hair, the only way to go is up! I’ve worked with children and adults who went from having no hair at all to regrowing full heads of hair in just a few months. It’s not about magic—it’s about taking consistent, positive action to support your body’s healing process.
Myth #5: Diet and Lifestyle Don’t Affect Hair Loss
This one is so important to clear up. Diet and lifestyle absolutely play a huge role in hair loss. Hair growth is directly tied to your overall health. The precursor to hair loss is poor health, and the solution to healing alopecia is improving your health. That’s why I call my program the Hair N' Heal Program—because healing your hair starts with healing your body. When your health is optimized, your hair has the best chance of growing back strong and healthy.
Myth #6: Topical Treatments Alone Can Heal Alopecia
Many people turn to topical treatments in the hope that they will solve their hair loss issues. Unfortunately, there’s no magic topical that can cure alopecia on its own. If such a treatment existed, there would be a universal cure for alopecia. But the reality is, alopecia is a complex issue that requires a multi-faceted approach. Topicals might help in some cases, but they are not the end-all-be-all solution. Healing alopecia requires more than just slapping on a cream or serum. It’s a bigger picture than that, and you’ll need to address the root causes through diet, lifestyle, and mindset.
Myth #7: You Can’t Heal Alopecia After Many Years
A lot of people feel like it’s too late to heal their alopecia because they’ve been dealing with it for years. I’ve worked with clients who have had alopecia for decades, and they’ve seen significant regrowth. I’ve seen people heal after 5, 10, even 25 years of hair loss. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve had it. If you’re alive and willing to take action, you can absolutely heal.
Myth #8: This Method Only Works for Certain People
Another myth I often hear is that my approach only works for certain types of people or hair types. The truth is, this healing process works for everyone—no matter where you’re from or what your hair type is. I’ve worked with clients from all over the world—the UK, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, Malaysia, and many other countries—and the results are the same: when you nourish your body and support your health, your hair will grow.
Myth #9: You Need Expensive Treatments to Heal Alopecia
Wigs, laser caps, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), and other expensive treatments are often marketed as “cures” for alopecia. But here’s the truth: you don’t need any of these to heal. All you need is a commitment to your health and a willingness to take the right actions. The only thing you really need to heal alopecia is a strong desire to improve and the right action steps to support your body in the process.
You Have the Power to Heal
And so this is very, very important. There's a lot of misinformation out there and again, you have much more control than what you think and the wigs, the laser caps, the German rollers, the PRP is not necessary for alopecia. It just isn't and it's not necessary to heal alopecia either. All you need is the willingness and the desire to heal and also to take action.
That's what it is, it's desire plus action equals results. Now, mindset is also a nice added bonus, but if you've been following me, you can tell I'm very positive. I'm very optimistic and I inject this into you within my program, but then also within our coaching, because it's important to have hope, it's important to feel and, and get that optimism because it's necessary.
You can't live, you know, in a doom and gloom environment, nothing grows in the darkness. You know, everything grows in the sunlight. So you have to pour some sunshine into this. I've been there, I've done that and I'm telling you there's tons of misinformation. So even if it comes from a doctor, even if it comes from a dermatologist, even if it comes from anyone else on the road or on the street or in your life know that potentially it could be misinformation.
Potentially, it's not the full picture, potentially it's not a hundred percent accurate or it's not a hundred percent and this is very important. It was a hard lesson for me to learn. I grew up in a culture, I mean, my family thinking that doctors knew it, all that doctors were the end, all be all and whatever they said goes, and I grew up in this, like, not technically, but almost like, yes ma'am, no ma'am, yes sir, no sir type of environment where any adult that I saw had the last word.
As me as a child or as a teenager, as a young adult, they had the last word and so then when it comes to doctors, many times, we feel like they're the ones who hold all the answers. They're the ones who hold the cards. And I will say many times they do, you know, for different treatments or for different prognosis or diagnosis, they hold the cards and they can give you options.
Now, this is where I would say get a second, third, fourth, fifth, 10th opinion, get as many opinions as you can and the other thing I would say to you is look outside the box, look at alternatives, look at people who've been there, done that. And I'm very proud to say that I've healed, not just myself, but many others, hundreds of others, children and adults of all ages.
And that's key because there are many practitioners out there, alternative practitioners who maybe, they say they can help you with alopecia, but this is where we need to dive deeper. Like, what are those success stories? Who have they helped? Have they gone through alopecia? Do they understand me? Do they understand you?
And like where you're coming from, what is the success rate? What is their approach? Because when I went to all the gazillion doctors that I've seen, all different types of doctors, whether it was a natural path or other or regular conventional doctor, et cetera, it was very limited. It was the creams, the topicals, the potions, it was recommendations for injections, steroids and again, not one of them spoke to me about the risks or the side effects. Not one of them told me that the efficacy rate or that the success rate was extremely low to nothing. And I just wasted my time and I wasted my money.
That's what I did and I'm happy that I cut this short. I'm happy that I listened to my intuition and I took on my own route, the holistic approach is definitely required, but also listening to yourself because at the end of the day, you have more control than you give yourself credit for and we also have the power within ourselves. We just need to unlearn what we think is healthy and how to support our bodies to relearn how to truly do it in the best way to get the quickest results for our hair growth..
And I think this is very, very empowering and it's just so amazing because I can't tell you how many clients I've had, who tell me, I don't even know my diagnosis, or let's say they've seen five doctors and each doctor has given them a different diagnosis of the type of hair loss. They come to me thinking that they have a certain type of hair loss or they've self-diagnosed themselves by the research that they've done online.
They come to me, they're like, I don't think my hair is going to grow. Dah, dah, dah. They do the program low and behold. They may see hair growth and it continues. So the thing is it's like, even if online says there's no hope there's no cure, you have this type of alopecia and there's nothing you can do about it.
I would still bet on my body. I would still bet on my health. I would still do everything in my power to be the healthiest self, so that that hair comes through. And again, it's a mind, body spirit situation and so you need all components to really be your best self. And I will say that even those who were skeptical, even those who thought that they couldn't see hair growth have seen it. Believing is part of that, taking action as the other step, look twice, and think twice about the information that you do receive about alopecia.
Think about potentially what's the hidden agenda and also analyze, you know, is this healing approach worth it? Is it beneficial? Are there risks? Are there no risks? Are there side effects? Are there no side effects? This is all very important to take into consideration, as a mother now I want everything holistic and natural as much as possible. I want to keep my baby as healthy as possible in the most natural way, supporting the body and having gone through alopecia myself and healing myself, I'm actually better prepared now so much more now to protect him from any and all things as much as possible.
Takeaway:
You have the power to heal alopecia.
It's really a crash course into unlearning to relearn what true health looks like and being your best self. So don't give in to the misinformation. There is fake news in this industry, and a lot of times we hold much more power than we're allowed to believe. So believe in yourself, believe that your body can heal and take action from there!
