Welcome back to the Alopecia Angel Podcast! I'm your host, Johanna Dahlman, and I'm thrilled to be here with you today. We're going to dive into some common mistakes I see frequently when it comes to hair loss. These may very well apply to you, so stay tuned as we go through them. But first, let me share a little story.
Â
Yesterday, I was at the supermarket—I'm currently traveling for a functional medicine conference. As you may know, I'm deeply connected to functional medicine and use it with my clients at Alopecia Angel to heal alopecia naturally. While shopping in the produce section, I saw a woman with alopecia totalis. We started talking, and it turned out she's an influencer. I shared my story about healing my own alopecia areata, which was progressing into totalis, and her eyes lit up when she saw the full head of hair I have now. She was completely bald, young, and beautiful.
Â
While we spoke, my intuition told me that she had likely had alopecia since childhood, which turned out to be true. She’s had it since elementary school and is now in her twenties. The spark of hope I saw in her eyes when I told her that I healed my alopecia and that my clients do, too, was incredible. It reminded me of how important it is to offer people hope when they don’t know healing is possible.
Â
This leads me to an important message for all of you: If you’re dealing with alopecia, don’t lose hope. Healing is possible, and if your intuition tells you that you can heal, go for it. It doesn’t matter what people say or what you’ve tried in the past. You just need to find the right way for you.
Â
Now, let’s talk about some of the common mistakes I see when it comes to treating hair loss.
Â
Common Mistakes with Hair Loss:
Â
- Googling and DIY Treatments: One of the biggest mistakes I see is Googling solutions like onion juice treatments. If you want to repel coworkers, family, and loved ones, that's a great way to do it—but it’s not going to help with hair growth. There are no scientific studies backing onion juice for hair loss, and it’s not something I recommend.
Â
- Using DHT Blockers: Many people, especially those with female or male pattern baldness, turn to DHT blockers or supplements like saw palmetto. But DHT blockers aren’t needed for everyone. At Alopecia Angel, we’ve seen hair growth in clients with various types of hair loss without using DHT blockers. What’s needed is an individualized approach that looks at you as a whole, not just your hair loss type.
Â
- Overloading on Supplements: Another common mistake is over-supplementing with things like biotin and zinc. Too much biotin is toxic, and many of you are already getting enough biotin from your diet. More supplements won’t fix the root cause of your hair loss.
Trying to throw things at the wall and see what sticks isn’t the solution. Everyone’s hair loss journey is different, and what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another. That’s why it’s so important to get a personalized evaluation to address your specific needs.
In fact, many of my clients have seen five to seven doctors before coming to me, and it’s only then that they start seeing real results. Whether you’re seeing traditional doctors or functional medicine practitioners, many are taking a generalized approach that doesn’t address your individual situation.
Â
Reevaluate Your Approach:
Â
If you’ve been trying things like DHT blockers, biotin, or onion juice, it’s time to rethink your strategy. Hair loss treatments aren’t one-size-fits-all, and relying on quick fixes will keep you spinning in circles. Focus on finding a tailored, strategic approach to heal your hair loss for the long term.
Â
I also have an exciting announcement! We’re launching a scholarship for the Hair & Heal program. I’ve been privately giving away this program each year to individuals who couldn’t afford it, but now we’re making it official. The scholarship is open to anyone worldwide, and like a university scholarship, there will be an application process that includes an essay and personal details. I’ll select one person or family by November 1st to join the program.
If you’re committed to your healing journey but facing financial challenges, this could be your opportunity to get the support you need. I’ll include the scholarship application link in the show notes, and I encourage anyone interested to apply.
