Â
Welcome back to the alopecia angel podcast, awaken to hair growth. I am your host, Johanna Dahlman and today we are talking about 10 things you don't need, 10 things that you can save your money on because they don't work.
Â
10 things that do not bring hair growth to you:
Â
- PRP - PLATELET RICH PLASMA
Â
PRP, if you do your research, it takes anywhere from two to three years to possibly see any growth. I've had numerous clients tell me “I'm doing PRP or I've tried PRP” and guess what? none of it has worked. It's unfortunate because it costs a lot of money. They're shelling out 4, 5, 6, 10 grand for tons and tons and tons of these treatments, which are very time-consuming but at the same time, they are challenging because it's a process and it's not necessarily easy to go through, nor is it painless. There is some pain involved, even one client, she was doing this for her son and she saw no results and she was shelling out money, money, money for the PRP with no results. So save your money on that.Â
Â
- DERMA ROLLERS
Â
Derma rollers also don't work and you don't need them to heal alopecia. So PRP, derma rollers, and anything else on this list are not needed for healing alopecia. Derma rollers is one more thing and a lot of these things are filled with marketing. And so you want to be cautious because not everything is or does what it says and potentially there are side effects, but then the other potential to that is that it's just another gimmick.
Â
So how far are you going to do for a quick fix? These are all quick fixes and these quick fixes don't work and at the end of it that's what this is, PRP dermal rollers. And your next one is,
Â
- LASER AND HELMETS CAPS
Â
This is another one that people buy all the time thinking like, I can just do this while I get my mani/pedi, or I can do this while I'm watching TV or cooking and I'm good to go. No, laser helmets are also a thing like a gimmick of any sorts and these also do not create hair growth. Now, the laser helmets and caps also, if you do your research and you start seeing which one is best potentially could cause other harmful effects and on the flip side, It also takes months and years to potentially see any hair growth.
Â
They don't guarantee any results. None of these things guarantee results because one size does not fit all and I've said this over and over again, one size does not fit all. And so if you're thinking that the PRP, the derma rollers, laser helmets, or anything else on this list will give you hair growth, understand that you are a very unique person and your health, your alopecia, the type of hair loss that you have in your backstory and everything else is very unique. Therefore it cannot be one size fits all. These are all gimmicks that you're wasting your money on. The next item, number four on the list is,
Â
- 10,000 MICROGRAMS OF BIOTIN
Â
I see this a lot. A lot of people think biotin is the answer. They want to go and get the highest level, which is 10,000 micrograms, just because they sell it at a certain level doesn't mean that it's beneficial for you, and that could be for high or for low. You have to really understand supplements, to understand what's correct for you.
Â
So for example, biotin at 10,000 micrograms is actually toxic. It's toxic to your liver and to your kidneys and biotin, if you wanted to take it at lower levels is a healthier option. And some things that you see in stores, whether it's vitamin C or anything else in terms of supplements, it could be low levels.
Â
And you think you're doing the right thing by taking the supplement, but the low levels are so low that guess what? They're not moving the needle and so low levels of supplements or high levels of supplements could be hindering or not doing anything for you. So this is why you want a personalized evaluation and in the hair and heal program, this is where we do evaluate and look at all your supplements of what you're taking, to see what's harming you, what's good for you, what you should stop taking, what you could continue taking in order to make it best for you because you are different from anyone else and again, we're not all the same.
Â
The next thing, number five on the list is,
Â
- DIET ALONE THAT’S NOT TAILORED TO YOU
Â
So a lot of people think that, okay, if I have hair loss, I should just eliminate certain foods. I should just eliminate certain things. I should just do this. I should just do that. But they're taking advice of, of what, of who, you know, even nutritionists, get this wrong.
Â
And I say this because I helped nutritionists. I helped hairstylists. I helped nurses. I helped pharmacists. I helped people in any capacity of the medical industry and most of them get them wrong. I've never found one person who's gotten a hundred percent on the re-evaluation form, not one person that's like a teacher saying not one person gets an A on the test.
Â
Now, if you have hair loss, you don't have an, A, we have an issue here, right. Diet alone will not heal your alopecia or your hair loss, diet does help especially because we eat three times a day because we tend to actually have extra snacks maybe and because it's something that we do daily, right? But at the same time, it's not the end all be all. And the other flip side to you, to this is that, it's not tailored to you.Â
Â
So in the hair and heal program, we customize the diet for you because you can't prescribe the same diet for a pescatarian, to a vegan, to a vegetarian, to someone who's like, let's say a professional athlete or does marathons, or does CrossFit to someone who just has a standard nine to five, or maybe who's a homemaker or maybe who, you know, just as retired, they're all different varying opportunities here and it needs to be customized. Diet alone will not heal your hair loss or your alopecia. It just won't, it can help, but maybe that needle won't be moved so greatly as you would expect.Â
Â
The next gimmick here or the thing that's wasting your money on is,
Â
- ROGAINE OR MINOXIDIL
Â
Rogaine and minoxidil are two things that are one of the same. And it's a shampoo or a foam that you put on. They have, you know, specialty formulas for women and for men, I do not recommend this for children. I do not recommend this for adults as well. It has lots of chemicals and the people who I know who have used it for years have side effects, have negative side effects, have scalp burns, have issues with their scalp later on, have kind of like a backlash of using this product for so long or even just for a few days. And the worst part about it. If you don't know already, that is if you do see hair growth, once you stop the product, guess what? All that hair vanishes, it vanishes, and you start worse off than you did from the first day that you started.Â
Â
So let's say you have 50% of your hair, you start the Rogaine or the minoxidil and then all of a sudden you start to see hair growth and let's say, I don't know, you're on a trip and they lose your luggage and you can't get Rogaine where you're at because you're on a private island and you're there for a couple of weeks and then all of a sudden, guess what? you're going to start to see massive hair loss, massive hair loss so much so where it'll be worse than that 50% of where you started, if that makes sense. And so things will get worse once you stop the Rogaine and it's not sustainable, it's something it's like putting chemicals on your body, it's not sustainable.Â
Â
There's going to be a negative side effect, a ripple effect, a risk of some sort. If you want to learn more about those risks and negative side effects, I have a free PDF on my website - alopeciaangel.com forward slash free, and you can find all the PDFs there that I have for free for you.Â
Â
The next thing that you're wasting your money on is,
Â
- THE ALL IN ONE HAIR, SKIN AND NAILS SUPPLEMENTS
Â
And I can see, and I understand how many people would be attracted to this. They go to the drugstore. They're like, Ooh, I have hair loss. Let's see if there's a supplement and lo and behold, there is, there's a hair, skin and nails supplement for many people, but this actually also tends to backfire. Why? Because it's an all-in-one and the all-in-one many times uses just a little bit of everything or just a little bit, and maybe not in the doses that you need.
Â
Also, they're trying to put everybody in the one size fits all. And so I've had many, many clients come to me using or having used or having but the most expensive supplements on a monthly basis for their hair, skin and nails supplement and nothing's working. And of course, cause nothing's working because it's not tailored to them.
Â
You cannot just randomly buy supplements and think they're going to work even though that's, that's what they want you to believe. That's what they want you to think but it won't. And so this is a problem, and it's a misnomer, additionally, many times there's many ingredients in there that actually backfire against you.
Â
And you're like, really? Why would that happen? Well, that's just like having a certain shampoo that has a bunch of chemicals in it that would create hair loss. There are tons of shampoos that create hair loss. There are tons of beauty products that actually treat more harm than good and so having a concerning eye, a discerning eye for all of this is important because again, the all-in-one approach one size fits all approach will not work. It won't work long term as well.
Â
So stay away from the all-in-one hair, skin and nail supplements, regardless of how much marketing they put against. If it's not customized to you, if you don't know exactly what you should be taking, then I would say, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it.
Â
The next thing which I kind of touched upon in this last number was,
Â
- THE SPECIALTY SHAMPOOS DON’T WORK
Â
And there's a bunch out there, of course, as you know, a bunch of specialty shampoos and some have, again, tons of great marketing behind it. Others have lots of claims all in all the specialty shampoos again, don’t work.
Â
The thing is when it comes to alopecia, when it comes to any hair loss, you have to understand that it's not a topical situation. It's not something that you can just throw on your head and think that something will happen. It's not on the outside, it's on the inside. We have to heal on the inside out. So for example, when you plant a seed of a tomato plant or of daffodils or any other plant it's from the inside out, where does the flower or the vegetable come from?
Â
It comes from the seed and the seed is from the inside out. And guess what? The environment, the dirt, the water, the sun, the temperature, the weather, everything affects it. Even, you know, the fertilizer which you feed it, would you, would you give everything affects the flower, affects the tomato plant, affects the tree, anything else?
Â
Right. And so we're just the same. You can't expect that if we have hair loss, that it's a situation of not enough, I don't know, fertilizer and not enough pesticides or not enough sun or not enough or none of that, just to kind of compare with the plant. So, no, it's not from the outside, it's from the inside and this is where people get it wrong.
Â
And this is why when you come to me or the clients who have come to me, they realize this inside the program, because it's not an outside topical thing that we have to do, it's from the inside. So for example, if your car is not working or not running, do you think it's because it's the paint job, do you think it's because you know, there's a dent on the fender or on the bumper? No, if the car is not running it's because it's the engine, it's the spark plugs. It's the, maybe the mechanical situation that's inside. It's not the paint job. It's not the windows, no, it's not that it's the inside.
Â
So you have to go in and you have to like, look under the hood, so to speak, right? And so this is what we do for you in the hair and heal program too. We look underneath the hood cause that's, that's important.
Â
So the next thing that I see clients and people throw their money away on is,
Â
- ACUPUNCTURE
Â
Acupuncture, I get it. I'm into traditional Chinese medicine too. I've done acupuncture myself as well. Now I will say I have lots of friends in this acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine arena. And they've all told me that they have never seen results with their practice, with people with alopecia and again, it's because acupuncture is a complimentary access. It's a complementary solution. But it's not the end all be all.
Â
So for example, you know, when you get injured, You might need a cast. You might need some physical therapy. You might need massages. You might need to wear certain types of socks or compression bands, or what have you, when you're injured, right? Let's say you injured your foot or your ankle, or you twist your ankle.
Â
It would be the same way. It's complimentary but it's not the end all be all. And so when it comes to hair loss, when it comes to alopecia, it's complimentary, it's not the end all be all. So you can do acupuncture if you'd like, but don't think that this is the one thing that'll give you results because it won't, it wont.
Â
So you're wasting your money now, granted, if you want to do acupuncture, just because you like it, because you liked the needles, you like this quiet time, do it. There's no harm in doing acupuncture, you know, or Reiki or balancing chakras or anything else of this nature. That's not a, I mean, there's no harm into it, but to say that any of these modalities would be the one all be all for alopecia, no. This would not be it. The same goes for the,
Â
- TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE AND HERBS
Herbs help, I do like herbs. I do like some herbs better than others. I do like natural treatments of course, as you know, this is what I'm all about, but in essence, again, Chinese traditional medicine is not the end all be all to alopecia.
Â
Now, if you want to do it, you can, I don't necessarily recommend it on the program because it can interfere and the thing is, even with natural things like herbs, you have to be careful because it could be very potent and very strong. So for example, a lot of times you could read online or maybe through a doctor or maybe through a homeopath or maybe through another outlet that valerian root is really good for those of you who want to sleep and want deep sleep.
Â
Here in where I live there's like a tea. It's like a sleepy time tea, you know, it's to help you go to sleep. It has valerian root in it and the side effects so to speak to this caffeine free natural tea that I drank was overwhelming. So overwhelming, the valerian root had me seeing things, seeing stars, feeling super dizzy.
Â
I couldn't even get out of bed. It was a, almost like hypnotic. And so, you know, even though it's a natural herb, even though it was at a supermarket in a tea, it can still have a negative side effect to you. And this is why you have to be cautious with herbs. This is why you have to be cautious even with natural herbs.
Â
It's not, again, one size fits all and it's not like everything's going to work the same for everybody cause it won’t. Just like I had an adverse reaction to valerian root in this tea. For some people, this could be a great little tonic for them right before bedtime but for me, it's something I stay away in and I already know valerian root does not go well with me.
Â
And so traditional Chinese medicine herbs, from what I've seen, what I've experienced, um, myself and my clients, I do not recommend necessarily because again, it's not the one all be all and even though they could be tailored to you, there's more work to be done so much more work to be. And it's not the full picture of healing alopecia.
Â
Again, alopecia is a puzzle and it doesn't have just 10 pieces to the puzzle. It's got a thousand and these a thousand pieces are necessary to put altogether. Just like a recipe to put all together so that you can heal it from the inside out. And so again, just dumping a bunch of products on your head is not going to do it.
Â
You already know this, you should already know this. If not already, just, you know, forcing yourself to eat all these pills and herbs and things, just Willy nilly is also not going to work. It has to be customized. This is why my program works so well. A bonus though, I wanted to give you, so those were the top 10 things.
Â
So let me just recount them. It was number one was:
- PRP - PLATELET RICH PLASMA
- DERMA ROLLERS
- LASER AND HELMETS CAPS
- 10,000 MICROGRAMS OF BIOTIN
- DIET ALONE THAT’S NOT TAILORED TO YOU
- ROGAINE OR MINOXIDIL
- THE ALL IN ONE HAIR, SKIN AND NAILS SUPPLEMENTS
- THE SPECIALTY SHAMPOOS DON’T WORK
- ACUPUNCTURE
- TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE AND HERBS
Â
So you gotta be careful with that and guess what? It doesn't come out until months, years later. I've mentioned this with articles that I've put up on my Instagram account, uh, with monat, with Tresemme, with devacurl. There are many, many, many products out there that actually create hair loss. The latest one was actually one from Johnson and Johnson.
Â
They're the owners of OGX. OGX is like an organic quote unquote brand that you can find in the US, but you can also find it here in Europe. They have different flavors and smells and whatnot, but it has certain chemicals in it that create hair loss and so they'd been under a lot of lawsuits as well here recently, you can find this all online.
Â
So a lot of these lawsuits, you know, show up because they're, they're so high, highly visible and, you know, consumers need to know. So then after that we had acupuncture and TCM, traditional Chinese medicine herbs. The bonus that I wanted to give you. So the bonus that I wanted to give you for 10 things that you're wasting your money on for your hair growth is the,
Â
(BONUS) 11. CORTISONE SHOTS, PRESCRIPTION DRUGS FROM DERMATOLOGIST AND DOCTOR
Â
The cortisone shots and the prescription drugs, the creams, all that don't work. It's not long-term. You can't be injecting yourself with steroids all the time. And even for a child, this is something that I would not recommend as a mother. I would not recommend any prescription drugs of this nature for alopecia. There's a better way and that way is natural without any risks and with results that you can see from the inside out.
Â
Again, this is not a topical situation. It looks topical, but it's not, there's much more work to be done and that comes from the inside out. So those are the 10, 11 bonus things that you're wasting your money on for hair growth. So I hope I saved you at least a thousand dollars right here with this podcast.
Â
Let me know if you have any comments. I look forward to hearing from you. Take care.Â
